I love capturing photos of plants, food and non-living things because I always believe, although they are not human, but they do have their own expression and emotion yet to be read and appreciated.

Hello Stranger

HelloStranger

A Mother’s Day Dinner & A “Tattoo”

Since last cooking experience, I strongly believe I need more practice in the kitchen. Besides the lunch treat to my parents, I have decided to cook for them dinner on mother’s day. Flipped through recipe, these were what I chose:

P1070940P1070950

Ponfret Fish Soup with Yam

1. Slice pomfret fish, 2. cook the soup base using fish bone and anchovy, 3. fry yam and last but not least 4. put yam, fish fillet and adequate seasoning in soup to cook.

sP1070944

Stewed Pork with Onion

1. Marinate pork (whole piece) with sesame oil, pepper and soy sauce for 30 minutes, 2. Fry pork until golden brown, dished up 3. leave a tbsp of oil in wok and fried diced onion until fragrant (10 pieces of small onion and 1 big onion), add 1 tbsp of oyster sauce, 3 tbsp of soy sauce and 1 tbsp of rock sugar, dished up, 4. add pork with sauce and steamed for another 1 hour, 5. cut pork into smaller pieces and boiled sauce until thickened. Finally, pour the sauce over pork slices and served!

Butter Prawn

1. Mix corn flour with water, 2. add in prawn and spoon the mixture to fry, dished up, 3. heat up butter, fry curry leaves and chilli padi until frangrant, 4. add evaporated milk and seasoning, cook until thickened, and finally 5. add in fried prawn dough and mixed well.

P1070947P1070956

Comments from happy parents: Stewed pork with onion tasted good (actually I think the dish turned out better than I expected), the soup was nice too, but butter prawn has failed, the flour was too thick and not crispy at all.

Actually I should skip the flour, just cook the sauce with prawn will be good enough. As usually, many mistakes were made in the kitchen, most silly is, I used bare fingers to clean and remove seed from chilli padi, ended up my 10 fingers were “burning” internally the whole night. Then the clumsy me burnt my arm too when I was trying to clean the hot wok, rewarded myself a “tattoo” for my hard work Sad smile, hope it won’t leave a scar later on.

Tuesdays with Morrie

tuesdayswmorrieFriends have recommended this book – Tuesdays with Morrie, an old man, a young man and life’s greatest lesson, to me long time ago but I’ve just finished the book in March. It’s not a book that you can keep it for yourself after reading, you will actually feel that you need to share the story with somebody eagerly . The book that I read is a Chinese translated version and now I’m looking forward to reading the original one.

The story is about the author, Mitch Albom, by chance seeing his professor, Morrie Schwartz’s interview on TV and knowing his favourite professor who he used to call him coach, had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a disease which eventually lead to death. Then, both of them decided to meet each other every Tuesday to discuss about “Life” before his ended. Each Tuesday, they will have different topics to talk about, for Morrie, he wished to share as much as he could and for Mitch, he wished to write down and tell the world what had he learnt from this life’s greatest lesson.

Topics that they discussed include family, regret, culture, love… It’s not a long story, but every words made you think. I watched the movie too, and these sentences got my attention:

“Once you learn how to die, you learn how to live.”

“Love each other or die.”

“What’s wrong with no. 2?”

“We think we don’t deserve love, that if we let it come in, we’ll become soft. But love is the only rational act, let it come in.”

“Dying is only one thing to be sad over… Living unhappily is something else.”

“The most important thing in life is to learn how to give out love, and to let it come in.”

“Forgive yourself before you die. Then forgive others.”

“There is no experience like having children… if you want the experience of having complete responsibility for another human being, and to learn to love and bond in the deepest way, then you should have children.”

“Love wins. Love always win.”

“Afraid of aging reflects one’s life haven’t found a meaning.”

Frankly speaking, I am still searching the meaning of LOVE, I’m trying to find out how to define LOVE in a rational way, in a way that my stubborn and square head can understand. Anybody can spare me your understanding about LOVE?

Ah Yat Abalone

This was an early Mother’s Day celebration luncheon with my parents! Last year we were in Nobel House and this time @ Ah Yat, Avenue K branch. I saw the package in the newspaper and it is very similar to what Nobel House offers – serving dish by dish individually, it is more pricy because the dishes are more premium, I guess (click hyperlink to compare).

RM88.80++ per pax, dishes include:

Starter – Salt & Pepper Crab Leg (lovely, I wish I had more)

Soup – Fish fin soup serve with beansprout

3rd & 4th dish – Baby abalone & Kailan (their signature dish, you can’t complain and of course all ingredients were cook flawlessly, much better than those abalone in can)

5th dish – Baked fish fillet with onion sauce (I like this dish the most!)

6th dish – Fried rice with egg (erm… has no idea why chef put this in the package, too ordinary compare to the above dishes)

Desserts – Almond tea & mango jelly (I usually don’t take almond tea, but I must say, this is nice, but I’ve no idea why chef choose this dessert over the others as I don’t think a lot of Malaysian like almond tea. The jelly is not as good too, I rather wish they serve me fresh fruit rather than colouring jelly)

I personally thinks that dishes from Nobel House were tastier and more unique and creative, simple ingredients but creative presentation.

Nando’s Chicken

你问我爱你有多深,我爱你有几分?(a song from Teresa Tsang, meaning how much am I in love with you?) I love this Portuguese fast food – Nando’s so much until an extend my friends will skip me when asking everybody’s suggestion on what to eat if they know that Nando’s is in the mall. Because my answer will always be the one – Nando’s Chicken. Ya I know, I can be very boring sometimes.

And every time, I order the same dish too - Quarter chicken with 2 side lines (coleslaw & peri chips), mild peri-peri for the chicken, and I want the drumstick part + ice lemon tea.

 P1070861P1070862P1070865P1070866

I think as I’m growing older, I can’t eat too much, as my mom like Nando’s too, now I usually order half chicken + 2 side lines for sharing. Then there was a day I craved for Nando’s again, I went there alone and ordered my favourite dish, when I called for the bill, I realized, Nando’s isn’t really very “affordable” compare to McD & KFC, RM25+ for a lunch meal… well, at least I can’t afford this everyday.

There’s a very small mistake that I made, for unknown reason, I mistaken corn starch as corn oil (I swear, I’ve been looking at the recipe for non lesser than 5 times, and my mom helping me up too, but non of us notice this mistake), that’s why my cake was super moisture, and make it very very difficult to come out from the tin. When my mom sending some to my neighbour, she was saying the cake tasted good and she wanted to copy the recipe, then only she corrected me the starch mistake. I must be blind or something… Sarcastic smile

Malacca Day Trip 23.04.10

The best thing being single is you can jump on a car and head to any destination that suddenly hit your mind. I still can’t imagine myself in a wedding dress even I have already started panicking on my biological clock. Well… come back to the topic, I have a handful of friends who are still in the single club, which I’m still a platinum member in it, and in a fine sunny day, I received a phone call from one of them, asking if I’m free the next day, if I want to join another 2 of them do a Malacca eating day trip. Without much or any further ado: “Yea!!!”, “alright, will let you know when & where we shall meet up to carpool.” Committing a trip is just as easy and fast as that.

P1070822

Jonker Walk, only this happening during weekend. A place which is always in the must-do list visiting Malacca town.

Since this was an eating trip… what must I share other than food?

Picture1_picself_2Picture2_picself_1Picture3_picself_2Picture4_picself_3

Pic 1: Popiah – a real famous (= good business) one in town, we waited for about 40 minutes to get it. The special part is, the hawker put pork lard in it. Taste interesting but try not taking a lot at a go, not only not very healthy for your heart but will get very greasy too.

Pic 2: Ban Lee Siang Satay Celup, some said Capitol nicer but frankly speaking, I can’t tell any difference. This is a must eat in Malacca, not eating means not entering the town. Smile It’s another form of steamboat, but the soup isn’t herbal, tomyam or chicken stock clear soup, you are actually dipping the food into a pot of boiling satay gravy to cook!

Pic 3: Snacks @ Jonker Street. Must eat list included Cendol, nyonya desserts, dodol, pineapple tart and this time, I found Portuguese egg tart there and a very interesting snack – tornado chip.

Pic 4: Beer @ Jonker Street. The street getting so popular and flooded with tourists, there is a backstreet full of pubs. We can’t be stuffing any food into our stomach but that doesn’t mean that we can’t drink! We ended up pub-hopping for beer before we ended our 12 hours food trip to Malacca.

Couverture Chocolate

When I was studying the recipe of Chocolate Indulgence Cake, I came across this word – Couverture Chocolate… I only heard of chocolate, white and dark chocolate, couverture? Sound very interesting… Then, I googled a little and these are the easiest way helping me to understand CHOCOLATE, all over again.
